History of Vermouth as a spirit
Unlike mass-produced vermouths, primarily from Italy, our version is hand-produced from our Pinot Noir harvest each year. The grapes soak in our proprietary gin for 12 months and form the base of our Pinot Noir Gin. To what is left from the gin production, we add the traditional botanical mugwort from our Garden (the Italians call this "wormwood") and send for ABV testing then diluted to 22% and bottled in our signature brown 50cl bottles.
The modern versions of this astounding liquid were first produced in the mid to late 18th century in Italy. Originally used for medicinal purposes, it was later served as an aperitif in fashionable cafés in Turin, serving it to guests around the clock. In the late 19th century, it became popular with bartenders as a key ingredient for cocktails such as the Negroni, Manhattan and Rob Roy.
Historically, there have been two main types of vermouth: Rosso (sweet) and Bianco (dry). Secret Garden Distillery's Vermouths are made without preservatives or chemicals or added sugar - just nature distilled from "seed to sip".
