Rooted in Tradition, Grown in the Garden: A Story of Scottish Craft Spirits

Rooted in Tradition, Grown in the Garden: A Story of Scottish Craft Spirits

Scotland’s reputation for exceptional spirits spans centuries, landscapes, and countless stills—but there’s more to our story than whisky. A new chapter is unfolding, led by independent Scottish craft distillers who honour time-honoured techniques while bringing fresh perspectives and botanicals into the mix. At Secret Garden Distillery, we’re proud to be part of that evolving tradition—grounded in heritage, grown by nature, and guided by purpose.

A Rich Heritage of Distilling Excellence

Scotland's distilling legacy is legendary. From the Highlands to the Lowlands, each region has developed its own styles and techniques over generations. Traditionally, this has meant whisky—but in recent years, a new generation of distillers has begun to explore a wider world of botanicals, reviving age-old recipes and introducing innovative Scottish craft spirits shaped by the local landscape.

Gin, especially, has seen a renaissance. While not new to Scotland, its reinvention through native ingredients and small-batch production has made it a canvas for creativity. And what sets Scottish spirits apart—whether whisky, gin, rum or botanical blends—is a deep respect for provenance, process, and patience.

Distinctive Ingredients, Local Influence

The character of a spirit begins with its ingredients. In Scottish whisky, it’s the pure water and malted barley. In craft gin and botanical spirits, it’s the vibrant botanicals—from wild juniper to native herbs and garden-grown florals.

At Secret Garden Distillery, an artisan Scottish gin distillery nestled in the hills outside Edinburgh, we grow and hand-harvest many of our botanicals just steps from the stills. Every flower, leaf, and root tells a story of place and season. Whether it’s lemon balm picked in May or rose petals flowering beneath the Scottish sun in June, our spirits tell a story of Scottish soil, seasonal change, and garden-grown craft in every drop.

Craftsmanship in Every Step

True Scottish craft distilling is about more than size or scale. It’s about care, attention, and an artisan mindset. While some distillers rely on commercial flavorings, we use traditional copper stills, no artificial additives, and time-honoured distillation techniques to capture the purest expression of our botanicals.

We see the still room as a space of both science and story—where the alchemy of heat, water, and nature transforms the harvest into something truly magical: our handcrafted gin is a reflection of both tradition and innovation.

Sustainability: A Return to Natural Principles

For us, craft is inseparable from sustainability. Scottish distillers have long known the value of working with the land—and in today’s world, it’s more important than ever. At Secret Garden, we don’t just use natural ingredients; we grow them regeneratively. No pesticides. No chemicals. Just soil, sun, and patience.

Our sustainable distilling practices include eco-conscious packaging, water conservation, and waste reduction across every part of our process. From garden to glass, we are committed to preserving Scotland’s natural beauty while crafting spirits that speak of place and purpose.

Honouring the Past, Distilling the Future

Scotland's spirit heritage is rich with knowledge, but it’s not stuck in time. It grows, adapts, and blooms—just like our garden. As Scottish craft distillers, we stand on the shoulders of those who came before us, while also rooting our work in innovation, sustainability, and seasonality.

Whether you're sipping our Wild gin bursting with fresh indigenous Scottish plants, or visiting our distillery to walk through the garden that shaped your spirit, you're tasting a new kind of Scottish tradition—one that respects the old ways while growing something new.
