Our latest Distillery Garden blog from a very changeable February at the Secret Garden Distillery at the base of the Pentland Hills in Edinburgh. DIstillery Tours and the Cafe have been disrupted thanks to Storm Eowyn blowing out 52 panes of glass from the Glasshouse - we've been finding broken glass all over the Garden but hope to be open again next weekend.
The sun is finally rising before 8am, and setting after 4pm, so we don’t have to work in the dark! Snowdrops are peeking out of the ground, and the tips of daffodils and tulips are just starting to break the soil surface. There is a promise of colour and a whisper of spring in the crisp winter air.
The rose garden is getting well cared for this month, we are weeding, cutting back dead growth and mulching. The rose garden will be edged by elder and lilac bushes which are getting planted at the moment. Bare-root shrubs are best planted while dormant, so we are ceasing the opportunity while the ground isn’t frozen.
This photo from our new viewing spot clearly shows the rose garden laid out in its Fibonacci Spiral and shows the willow tunnel at the rear of the garden.
The past week we have also spent time in, and on, the willow tunnel. Weaving in last years growth. The branches that are too thick for weaving we cut off and use for plant support in the garden. Our sweet pea supports are all created from willow. Other jobs we are focusing on this month is pruning the wisteria and clematis to encourage flowering,
The garden and glasshouse are still recovering from storm Eowyn. All our trees are still standing, but sadly the glasshouse lost those 52 glass panes. Our work in the glasshouse has therefore been put on hold until all the panes have been replaced.
The end of the month will see the start of the seed sowing season! We will begin by sowing hollyhocks, violets and sweet peas.
Speak to you next month ....
