Delight the senses with Smoked Calendula and Chamomile gin
This month’s gin club is made with two very special and wonderful flowers; Chamomile and Calendula. They are so easy to grow at home, you simply scatter their seeds on prepared soil and you will have a profusion of flowers, colours and aroma all summer long.
Most of us know of the restorative and relaxing powers of Chamomile but did you know that Calendulas have been used for centuries, both internally and topically, to heal wounds, burns, and rashes. The flowers appearance are as bright, full and glorious as the sun herself. They are a traditional remedy for supporting the immune system and lifting the spirits. If that weren’t enough, the edible ray florets of the flower heads are bursting with antioxidant compounds.
We have always grown so many of both of these flowers here at the Distillery’s Secret Garden and I have used them for making relaxing healing compresses and herbal teas. When it comes to making our gin, we thought we would go one step further and mix the quality of the Chamomile flavours with a gentle smoke to add an extra layer of complexity.
We hope you enjoy this imaginative combination over ice with tonic. For a special twist, add a sprinkle of sunshine herself with some of the Calendula’s petals.
